Carnoustie Golf Links has three courses and the Burnside is one of them. It measures 6028 yards and is a Par 68. The Burnside is over shadowed by its neighbour the Championship course however in our view played a lot harder (mainly due to the wind!). The course opens with a gentle par 4 (SI 18) then straight away you are playing a 450 yard par 4 straight into the teeth of the wind followed by a 175 yard par 3 also into the wind.. The 4th is also a long par 4 however this is compensation for the second hole. Bizarrely Craig hit Driver and three wood short at the second (450 yards) and then hit Driver and Wedge to the 460 yard 4th. It just goes to show how a course can change with the elements. The par 3 5th is a lovely par 3 with water surrounding it and again into the wind proved very difficult indeed. You then progress into the depths of Carnoustie playing along side The Championship course. The first half is the shortest half although certainly the most difficult. Craig managed to card (+3) for the front nine making bogeys at the 2nd, 3rd and 7th. Stu managed a 42 even with the only real blemish being the double bogey at the 2nd. The back half although longer provided more opportunity to score with Craig starting with six straight pars and then followed up with a ‘two’ at the 16th after flighting a lovely 6 iron to two feet. A bogey at the par 4 17th (473 yards) due to a visit to the water hazard followed however a good drive into the greenside bunker at 18 (307 yards) was finished off with a good up and down to come back in (-1) to score a two over 70. Stu managed to come back in a superb 38 to card a scratch 80 that involved making a birdie at the par 4 (11th) and making a series of pars at the 10th, 13th, 17th and 18th. The course was superb and was difficult to name as signature hole however the 5th and 17th stand out for us. The Burnside is certainly a course you would play time and time again and we thank you for the great deal that a lady member got us for our charity. |
