   The Strathtyrum Golf Course
The Strathtyrum The Strathtyrum

On 1 July 1993, the Strathtyrum Course became the first new 18 hole layout to come into play at St Andrews for almost 80 years. The course takes its name from the adjacent Strathtyrum Estate, from which the land was purchased.  The Strathtyrum is a par 69, 5,620 yard course which is fairly flat.  The course sets up well for all standards of golfer and for us was most enjoyable especially Craig as he carded a 61 (-8) scratch score following the two rounds at Crail earlier in the day.

We tee off at 2.30 pm and we have the course to ourselves so we fly round in around just under two and half hours.  Craig got off to a flyer after hitting a poor tee shot into the left rough and a mediocre wedge into the green a 20 footer was sunk to start of with a birdie, followed by sinking another 20 footer at the next and a two putt birdie at the 4th starting with four 3’s set him on his way.  (-3 though 4).  A birdie at the short par 5 (playing very easy down wind) saw a good drive and a gap wedge into 30 feet and two putts ensued (-4) surprisingly the shortest hole on the course (6th, 120 yards) resulted in the only bogey on Craig’s card.  Another birdie however was carded at the 8th (par 3) again another long putt was holed and two pars at the 7th and 9th meant a outward score of 30 (-4).  Stu also played very solid through the first nine holes carding 39 (+5).  Stu went on to card a 40 back half (+5) and scoring a 79 which was a very good effort.  Craig made four more birdies on the back nine at the par 5 11th, the par 3 13th, the par 4 15th and the par 3 16th (almost a hole in one!!!). to come back in 31 and to card a 61 scratch.

Overall we have to say we loved this course as we both played extremely well.  We did play off the yellow tees though which only measured 5004 yards so the course was playing very short.  At £25 per round it is worth a visit and can easily be tied in with another course in the area and we recommend you do play this course should you visit St Andrews.
