Colvend was first formed in 1905 and was extended in 1985 to a 18 hole layout. Interesting fact is Peter Allis had a hand in its design. In 2007 the course made adjustments to the 12th and introduced a new 15th and 16th hole. Colvend is situated on the Solway Coast near Dumfries, Southerness, Dalbeattie and Castle Douglas. The views reach out over the Solway Firth to the Cumbrian Fells and Isle of Man. We arrive at Colvend for our 6th course of today and its about 2pm. Whilst having lunch we are looking at the scorecard saying well its only 5000 yards so it will be a nice easy walk however, it was anything but. Colvend has to be the longest 5000 yard course in the world…..but what a joy it was to play it was simply superb. We could easily talk you through every hole however we wont. The first is a short par 4 straight up hill (common theme today) although it is only a drive and a flick. The second a short par 3 takes you to the top of the course which has fabulous views of the Solway Firth behind you. The 8th is a fantastic par 3 which plays back to the road. Its definitely a club more than you think and also beware the river/burn at the front. W never seen it so lucky for us we missed it. The 10th and 11th are short par 4’s however don’t be fooled by the card as they are up hill (a big hill) and round trees (big trees). You then come to a tough stretch of holes from 12 through to 14. They are superb golfing holes though with water surrounding the 12th green and water coming into play off the 13th tee both were playing into wind making them all that more tricky. The 14th does provide an opportunity to make a birdie as a relatively short Par 5. The 17th hole is probably the signature hole due to its quirkiness. At 218 yards it is classed as a par 4 however you need to play it in stages one shot to the corner then you go straight left to a green. You probably could be brave and take on over the trees but unwise to do so. The 18th is a nice finishing hole with a large Oak tree on the right stopping you for going for the green (oh and that burn again is in front of the green). Your second is played to a tight green with a nice rockery in the background saying Colvend (see gallery). Scoring was very good Craig 3 under to the turn ended up finishing level as the back half took its toll. Was faultless first nine and should have made at least another two birdies missing two rather short putts. Stu was 42 to the turn and was finding his form again after a disappointing morning at Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie. Pretty much the same as Craig in the back half with course and probably the fact it was our 6th course taking its toll. An 86 scratch was a good effort though. Overall this course is a must it is very very good and we highly recommend it. |
