Dalbeattie is situated near Dumfries in “The Shire” (Kirkcudbrightshire). This 9 hole course has been recently extended and consists of seven par 4’s and two par 3’s. The course has fantastic views along the Urr valley, north to Cairnsmore of fleet and South to Kippford (our next stop) and the Lake District hills. We arrive here for our 4th course of today and its spot on 11 o’clock. Again there is not a soul about. The course opens with a par 3 (what is it with the courses down here opening with a par 3). We promptly open with a bogey and double bogey. The second is a long par 4 with stunning views and again we record a bogey and double bogey. The 4th is a 363 yard par 4 dogleg to the right and is by far the signature hole. There is out of bounds left and restrictions to the right. A hot to the corner is required leaving a short pitch to a tight green again with lovely views to the background. You then play down hill to a valley then up to the green which Craig managed to birdie and the followed up with another birdie at short 6th playing 285 yards which was just in range of the tee. Whilst Craig was getting his score together Stu was destroying his and was starting to get frustrated although a par 4 at the 6th put a smile on his chops. The 7th hole was a lovely hole of 314 yards which was very tight and you hit into a green surrounded by trees and there is no merit in going big as you will be out of bounds. A short par 3 ensues although at 153 yards it is not an easy hole and it required a good bunker shot to 6 inches for Craig to get his par. The course finishes with a lovely par 4 to the clubhouse/car park measuring 400 yards. Stu managed to hack it all the way down the left and almost hit the clubhouse window (that’s how bad he was playing). Once I had picked myself up off the ground form laughing (Stu wasn’t laughing) I managed to get my par and Stu a seven. Scores ended up 35 (one over) for Craig and Stu….no comment (48) Overall one of the better nine holes we have played and worth a visit even if its just for the views or to see how far Stu was left on the 9th to almost put it through the window! |
